Introduction
Blueberry 'Palmetto' (Vaccinium darrowii x hybrid 'Palmetto') is a southern high-bush blueberry developed for Florida's warm climate and low-chill requirements. It produces medium to large, sweet, flavorful berries and is one of the best performers in North and Central Florida. Available in a #3 container.
Growing conditions
- Light: Full sun.
- Water: Moderate; consistent moisture is key during fruit development.
- Soil: Acidic (pH 4.5 to 5.5), well-draining, organic-rich soil.
- Fertilizer: Acid-forming fertilizer such as azalea or blueberry formula in early spring and again in early summer.
- Season: Warm-season fruiting shrub; low-chill requirement makes it ideal for Florida.
Planting tips
Plant with another low-chill variety such as 'Sharpblue' or 'Gulf Coast' for cross-pollination. Space plants 4 to 6 feet apart. Mulch with pine bark or pine straw to maintain soil acidity and retain moisture. Prune after harvest to encourage new fruiting wood.
Troubleshooting
Yellowing leaves
Iron chlorosis from high soil pH. Lower pH with sulfur amendments and use acid-forming fertilizer.
Poor fruit set
Lack of cross-pollination. Plant a second compatible low-chill variety nearby.
Root rot
Overwatering or poor drainage. Improve drainage and reduce watering frequency.
Pet safety
Blueberries are non-toxic to pets and are generally safe if consumed in small quantities.
Quick care summary
Difficulty: Moderate. Light: Full sun. Watering: Moderate, consistent moisture during fruiting. Humidity: Moderate to high. Pet safety: Non-toxic.
