Introduction
Zoysia (Zoysia spp.) is a dense, fine-textured warm-season turfgrass known for its excellent drought tolerance, wear resistance, and ability to crowd out weeds. It is a moderate warm-season turfgrass that performs well throughout Florida's warm seasons and creates a lush, carpet-like lawn. Available as sod.
Growing conditions
- Light: Full sun to partial shade; best density in full sun.
- Water: Low to moderate; very drought-tolerant once established.
- Soil: Well-draining soil; adaptable to a range of soil types including sandy Florida soils.
- Fertilizer: Nitrogen-rich fertilizer 2 to 3 times per year following Florida-friendly guidelines.
- Season: Warm-season turfgrass; active growth spring through fall; goes dormant and turns brown in winter.
Planting tips
Install sod on a prepared, level surface. Water immediately after installation and keep moist for the first 2 to 3 weeks until roots establish. Mow at 1.5 to 2.5 inches height. Slower to establish than St. Augustine but very low-maintenance once established. Goes dormant and turns brown in winter, which is normal.
Troubleshooting
Winter dormancy browning
Normal seasonal dormancy. Grass will green up again in spring as temperatures warm.
Thatch buildup
Spongy feel underfoot. Dethatch in spring and avoid overwatering and excess fertilizer.
Large patch disease
Circular brown areas in fall and spring. Improve drainage and apply a labeled fungicide if needed.
Pet safety
Zoysia grass is non-toxic to pets and is generally safe for dogs and cats.
